New 94th season opening at the Vakhtangov Theatre.
September 9, on the eve of the opening of the 94th theatre season at the Vakhtangov Theatre, the traditional company gathering took place. The whole Vkhtangov company has enjoyed the big reunion in the Big lobby of the theatre, in a joyful anticipation of the start of the new season. The ceremony was started with a short documentary film dedicated the most important events of the last season – touring and anniversaries, rehearsals and premieres, the close of the 93rd season and the theatre renovation – everything that made the Vakhtangov actors live happily and be proud of in the past season.
The last season the theatre playbill have been joined by 9 new titles. Among them on the Main stage – “Puss in Boots” after the play of G.Kalau (director V.Ivanov), “Othello” by William Shakespeare (stage-version of A.Cholina), “Smile at us, O Lord” by G.Kanovich (director R.Tuminas), on a Small stage “The Marriage” by Nikolai Gogol (director S.Kutasov), “La crie de la langouste ” byD.Marell (director M.Tsitrinyak), “Jealous of herself” by Tirso de Molina (director A.Koruchekov). The First Studio of the Vakhtangov Theatre -“Six Characters in search of an Author” by L.Pirandello (director O.Gerasimov), “Peleas and Melisande” by M. Maeterlinck (director V.Ageev), “Miss Nobody from Alabama” by V.Luce (Director S.Medvedeva).
The 93rd season was rich with anniversaries. The last season V.Lanovoi and V.Shalevich celebrated their 80th anniversaries, E.Fedorov his 90th anniversary. Moreover the Vakhtangov company congratulated the Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation Alexei Kuznetsov on his 50th anniversary of creative activity.
The theatre touring schedules broadens each new year. The performances “Anna Karenina”, “Uncle Vanya”, “The Last Moons”, “Dedication to Eve”, “Wind in the Poplars”, “Okaemovs’ lifetime”, “Betrayal”, “My Quiet homeland”, “Matryona’s home”, “Medea”, “Measure for Measure”,”Peleas and Melisande” have toured all around the world (Smolensk, Ulyanovsk, Tula, Kaluga, Irkutsk, St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Krasnoyarsk, Saransk, Sergiev Posad; Havana, Barcelona, Vilnius, Riga, Tallinn, Craiova, Recklinghausen, Naples. The play “Betrayal” went on a big tour in the cities of Germany. “Eugene Onegin” is continuing the world tour and has already visited Vilnius, St. Petersburg, Paris, Krasnoyarsk, New York, Boston, Toronto, Tel Aviv, Ulan-Ude.
Kirill Krok has laid the plans bare about the upcoming tours of the Vakhtangov Theatre in the new season. In 2014-2015, the production of “Eugene Onegin” will continue a world tour: Riga, Tallinn (October), London (February), Berlin, Baden-Baden (April), New York (June). The opening of the season was preceded by large-scale touring of the theatre in Ulan-Ude with the performances of “Eugene Onegin”, “Anna Karenina”, “Uncle Vanya”, “Dedication to Eve”, “The Common Business”, “Medea”, “Games of the lonely”, “My Quiet homeland”. In October, the production of “Uncle Vanya” will be touring in Tbilisi, while “Anna Karenina” goes to Riga and Tallinn. In November, Cherepovets city will applaud to “The Masquerade”. In December, “The Demons” will be performed in Beijing (China), while “Eugene Onegin” cast and crew visits St. Petersburg. In January, Athens (Greece) will greet “Anna Karenina”. In April – “Eugene Onegin”, “Anna Karenina” and “Dedication to Eve” will be performed in Voronezh city. In May, the performances of “Smile at us, O Lord”, “Puss in Boots”, “Anna Karenina” and “The Masquerade” go on tour to Krasnoyarsk. In June, “The Coast of women” and “Wind in the Poplars” are invited to Germany. And the last but not least, the productions of “Smile at us, O Lord” and “The Masquerade” feature in the New York city and in Boston in July 2015.
The Artistic Director Rimas Tuminas has announced the up-coming premieres:
“The Marriage of Figaro” stage-version of V.Mirzoev (after P.-A. Beaumarchais) – premiere September 10;
“The Run” stage-version of Y.Butusov (after M.Bulgakov);
“Right you are if you think so” stage-version of A.Shapiro (after L.Pirandello).
An opening of the New Stage is planned for April 2015. Release of the following productions coincide with this event: “Elizabeth of England” by F. Bruckner, director G. Tuminayte; “Teenager” by F.Dostoevsky, director A. Yakovlev; “The House of Bernarda Alba” by G. Lorca, director A. Cholina; “The Actor” by A.Chekhov, director V. Beldiyan; “The Traveller”, director P. Gumbo, “Minetti” by T. Bernhard, director R. Tuminas. Two independent works of Oleg Lopukhov and Yuri Kraskov on productions of “Cricket on the Hearth” by Charles Dickens and “The Monument” by V. Zherebtsova.
