133 anniversary of Eugeniy Vakhtangov

13 February 2016

“…While the show is in progress kindness and warm feelings come from the stage to the audience. And by the end of the show spectators are fulfilled with joy.

In our performance we should reach the same. A smile should be hidden and should sparkle during the show. Each actor should keep a smile and should perform for this smile.

There are three necessary elements: the smile of an author, the feeling of art of an actor (the moment of triumph) and the unconsciously expressed features”. That’s what Eugeniy  Vakhtangov said during the very first rehearsals of the “Miracle of Saint Antony” by Maurice Maeterlinck. In 1921 this performance gave start to our Theatre.

Today we are smiling with warmth and just a small sign of bitter. Because it’s exactly 133 years since the day of birth of Eugeniy Vakhtangov.

Each year on this day actors, directors and all members of The Vakhtangov Theatre arrive at Novodevichy cemetery. To commemorate and express our gratitude. For his belief in theatre, his genius. For the establishment of Acting School and precise lectures that are being learnt through generations of actors and directors.

Our gratitude for the smile, the triumph and the miracle!
