Irkutsk Story (1959)
The premiere took place just before the new year 1960. The author devoted “The Irkutsk Story” to Julia Borisova. The action took place in the fifties: Siberia, Angara, the Irkutsk hydro-electric power station. Borisova played a cashier Valka-chippie, vulgar, self-assured, hoyden and resilient. The Vakhtangists were the first to put “The Irkutsk Story” on the stage, and then it went all over the Union. The success of the performance was stunning. “The Irkutsk Story” successfully blended with the theatrical situation of its time: it unusually combined the optimistic pathos and labor entourage with the sincerity of intonation.
