Badgers (1927)

Leonid Leonov dramatized his novel upon the theatre’s special request and “Badgers” became the first noticeable directorial work of Boris Zakhava. Stratification of village during the civil war years was devised by the stage director as the “peoples tragedy” where there were two poles, two forces — brothers: Bolshevik Pavel with nickname “comrade Anton” and Semen — leader of an anarchy movement of the “green”. The production was considered a success though many of its values were a duplication of “Virinea”’s findings. The success of “Badgers” was rather a political luck — the theatre went on with its “relevant” repertoire line, though an astute Rapp critic noticed that it’s not “victory over badgerness” which is emphasized in the performance, but the burden of personal feelings of the brothers.
